The genus
The genus has about 25 species covering most of Europe, Africa and East to West China. All the Arum are tuberous. They are related to the generas: Typhonium, Dracunculus, Sauromatum, Biarum and the supremely strange Helicodiceros. A. pictum is the only species to bloom just as, or before, the foliage emerges in the fall. All others bloom in spring or early summer. Most will grow quite well outdoors in a full to partly sunny site, but avoid hot locations. Once planted they are happy for a long time and will not wander except by seed.
