Astelia chathamica

Astelia chathamica is an evergreen perennial endemic to the Chatham Islands off New Zealand, growing naturally on moist forest floors, sheltered gullies and coastal peat bogs. It forms a dense clump of long, stiff, sword-shaped leaves covered in fine silvery hairs that give the foliage a metallic grey sheen. The plant can reach 1.2-1.5 m in height and width. It bears small, inconspicuous greenish flowers, followed on female plants by red berries. It grows in part shade or sun in mild climates, on well-drained soil, and is damaged by hard frost.
