Babiana blanda

Endemic to the southwestern Cape, South Africa, Babiana blanda grows in seasonally moist sand and loam of the Western Cape, a habitat now reduced by 80% through urbanisation and agriculture. Once thought extinct, the species was rediscovered in 2006-2007 in two subpopulations. This sword-leaved Iridaceae produces, in spring, a spike of large, fragrant, bright rosy-pink flowers attracting bees and butterflies. A threatened species, it requires well-drained sandy soil and a sunny position in cultivation.
