Babiana dreggei

Endemic to the Northern Cape, notably Namaqualand, in South Africa, Babiana dregei (sometimes spelled dreggei) grows in arid habitats. This small cormous Iridaceae reaches about 15 cm, with an erect, branched stem and slightly pleated, sword-shaped leaves with thickened veins and margins ending in a keeled tip. The flowers, deep purple-blue to magenta and marked with white, open between August and September and are pollinated by a long-proboscid fly. Assessed as of Least Concern, the species requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer rest.
