Babiana

Babiana vanzyliae (Iridaceae) is a cormous geophyte native to the sandy, sandstone soils of southern Namaqualand and the Bokkeveld escarpment near Nieuwoudtville, South Africa. Standing 4 to 12 cm tall, it has pleated, velvety leaves and strongly scented flowers ranging from pale bluish-mauve to yellow, with the lower tepals staying yellow and fading toward the edges. It flowers from early August to mid-September. Grow in full sun, in sandy, well-drained soil, keeping dry during summer dormancy.
