Babiana mucronata is a cormous plant of the family Iridaceae, endemic to South Africa, where it grows in the Mediterranean-climate areas of the Cape. A small plant 5-18 cm tall, it produces sword-shaped, pleated leaves with hairy margins. In spring it bears a simple or branched spike of 3-12 mirror-symmetrical flowers, dark to pale violet-blue, with the lower tepals white to cream edged with violet. Like most Babiana, it grows through winter and becomes dormant in summer; it is grown in full sun on well-drained soil kept dry in summer.
