Babiana odorata

Endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, from Piketberg to Durbanville, Babiana odorata grows in clay soil within renosterveld of the northwest and southwest Cape. This small, dwarf cormous Iridaceae (8-15 cm) bears pale yellow to cream flowers with deeper yellow blotches on the lower tepals and contrasting blue anthers. Strongly scented, with a spicy fragrance recalling violets, they attract bees. Like other Babiana, it becomes dormant in summer and requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and winter watering followed by a dry summer rest.
