Babiana secunda

Endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, known from Hopefield to Paarl, Babiana secunda grows in fynbos and renosterveld vegetation. This cormous perennial Iridaceae, now rare in the wild (only three of 47 historic subpopulations survive, most having been lost to farming and urban development on the Cape Flats and in the Swartland), bears the pleated, hairy leaves typical of the genus Babiana and one-sided spikes of flowers. It flowers in late winter and spring. In cultivation it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer rest.
