Babiana spathacea

Endemic to the Northern Cape, South Africa, Babiana spathacea grows in doleritic clay within karroid scrub of the western Karoo. This cormous Iridaceae, 10-60 cm tall, produces cream flowers, sometimes flushed lilac, marked with small red patterns, in September-October. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest typical of the Karoo's semi-arid climate.
