Native to Cape Province, South Africa, and naturalised in Australia, Babiana stricta grows in open sandy habitats. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 10-30 cm tall, forming a fan of pleated, hairy, sword-shaped leaves that emerge in winter. In spring it produces a short spike of up to ten cup-shaped, freesia-like flowers, often fragrant, in shades of blue, purple, mauve, cream or pale yellow. Flowering lasts three to four weeks, after which the foliage dies back. It requires full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer rest to perform well.
