Babiana truncata

Native to Namaqualand in South Africa, Babiana truncata (now often included within Babiana flabellifolia) is a small, stemless cormous geophyte no more than 8 cm tall. Its basally clustered leaves are pleated and distinctly fan-truncated at the tip. It produces sweetly scented, zygomorphic mauve to violet flowers with a tube 18 to 36 mm long, marked with cream to pale yellow nectar guides on the lower tepals. Like other Babiana, it needs full sun and well-drained sandy soil, with a dry summer rest.
