Babiana villosa

Native to the area between Malmesbury and Wellington in the Western Cape, South Africa, where it grows on clay soils, Babiana villosa is a small cormous geophyte 10-20 cm tall, with pleated, lance-shaped leaves covered in the soft hairs that give the species its name. In August and September it bears unscented, wide, cup-shaped flowers in mauve-pink, purple or scarlet, with large dark anthers, pollinated by monkey beetles. It needs well-drained soil, a sunny position and a dry summer rest, and suits pots and rock gardens.
