Babiana virginea

Native to the Roggeveld Escarpment in the Cape Province of South Africa, Babiana virginea is a tuberous (cormous) geophyte growing among rock outcrops in semi-desert habitat. Like other Babiana species, it produces pleated leaves and a spike-like inflorescence. In September it bears fragrant flowers, white to lightly tinged with mauve, marked with pale yellow or cream blotches on the lower lateral tepals. It thrives in well-drained soil and a sunny position, and becomes dormant during the dry summer, when it should be kept dry.
