"Bamboo dahlia" is the common name for the tree dahlia Dahlia imperialis, referring to its hollow, ridged stems, very similar in appearance to those of bamboo. Native to the humid mountains from Mexico to Colombia, it reaches 4 to 8 m in height within a single growing season and flowers late, in late autumn, with large, pendulous, mauve-pink flowers. Grow sheltered from wind, in rich, cool soil, in a sunny position; the frost-tender rootstock requires winter protection in cold climates.
