Barlia robertiana alba — Orchis terrestre

Widespread around the Mediterranean, Barlia robertiana, the giant orchid, is a tuberous terrestrial orchid with broad, often spotted foliage, notable for flowering remarkably early, from February to March. Its sturdy stem, reaching up to 1.10 m, bears a dense, large spike of fragrant flowers, usually a mix of violet, purple and green. The 'alba' form offered here is a hypochromic individual, lacking violet pigmentation: its flowers are white and green. It grows in sun to part shade, in well-drained calcareous soil, and becomes dormant in summer after seed-set.
