Begonia sutherlandii

Begonia sutherlandii is a tuberous perennial native to the mountains of southern and eastern Africa (South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, north to Tanzania), growing in shaded, moist forest at elevations of about 1000-1500 m. The tuber produces fleshy, reddish stems bearing asymmetrical, red-veined green leaves. From summer into autumn it bears pendent panicles of numerous small orange to orange-red flowers with yellow anthers. It also forms tiny bulbils in the leaf axils. Grown in part shade on cool, well-drained soil, it becomes dormant in winter.
