Bellevalia paradoxa is a synonym of Bellevalia pycnantha (formerly classified in the genus Muscari as Muscari paradoxum); its taxonomic identity is treated inconsistently between sources. Native to Turkey and the Caucasus, it grows in moist meadows and sunny rocky ground. This bulbous perennial has 5-7 sword-shaped leaves and produces, in spring, a dense spike of 50 to 100 small bell-shaped flowers, a deep, almost blackish blue-violet, tightly packed into a compact raceme. It requires full sun, sharp drainage and a dry summer.
