Bonatea speciosa

Widespread along the southern and eastern coasts of South Africa, from north of Cape Town to KwaZulu-Natal, and also in Zimbabwe, Bonatea speciosa grows in coastal scrub, on forest margins and occasionally in savanna, up to 1200 m. This robust terrestrial orchid, with fleshy, woolly tubers, reaches 1 m tall, with 7 to 20 sheathing lanceolate leaves and a dense, racemose inflorescence 16 to 40 cm long bearing numerous spice-scented green and white flowers. It flowers from June to December; strongly scented at night, the flowers attract hawkmoth pollinators.
