Boophone haemanthoides

Boophone haemanthoides, or Namaqua century plant, is a bulbous species of the Amaryllidaceae family, native to south-western Namibia and the west coast of South Africa, extending into the Karoo. From a very large bulb, it develops an upright fan of stiff, glaucous leaves arranged in two rows, which dies down in summer. The dense, brush-like flower head emerges directly from the bulb in summer, after the foliage has dried. It is grown in full sun, in very well-drained mineral soil, typical of desert geophytes.
