Brunsvigia grandiflora

Native to grassland and rocky ground in southern Africa (Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho), Brunsvigia grandiflora is a bulbous perennial with a large, partly exposed bulb. Flowering precedes the foliage: in late summer, a stout, leafless stem carries a spectacular spherical umbel up to 40 cm across, made up of 20 to 30 funnel-shaped, pink to deep pink flowers. The 10 to 15 wavy, upright, pale green leaves then follow. It grows well in full sun, in well-drained soil, with a dry rest period in winter and spring.
