Bulbinella nutans

Endemic to seasonally damp ground in the winter-rainfall Western Cape of South Africa, Bulbinella nutans (Asphodelaceae) is a perennial with a short rhizomatous rootstock topped by a tuft of narrow, channelled, glossy green, deciduous leaves. In late winter and spring an erect stem up to 1 m tall carries a dense, conical raceme of small star-shaped yellow to cream flowers, opening from the base upward. It grows in full sun, in soil that is cool to moist during the growing season and well-drained, becoming summer dormant.
