Caladium hortulanum

Caladium × hortulanum designates the group of horticultural cultivars of Caladium bicolor, a tuberous plant in the Araceae family native to tropical South America (the Amazon basin). Grown for its ornamental foliage rather than its inconspicuous spathe-type flowers, it produces large arrow- or heart-shaped leaves in varied colours (white, pink, red, green) on long stalks arising directly from the tuber, forming a clump 30-60 cm tall. It needs warmth, atmospheric humidity and partial shade, a rich, moisture-retentive soil, and a dry winter rest for the tuber in cold climates.
