Calanthe reflexa

Calanthe reflexa is a terrestrial orchid described in 1872, now sometimes included within Calanthe puberula, native to a broad range from the western Himalayas through Assam, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, growing on rocks in degraded forest between 1650 and 3000 m. It forms small clumps of pleated, evergreen leaves from which rises a long, unbranched flower spike. In late summer it bears up to 25 scented flowers with pale lilac petals surrounding an elongated purple-violet lip. It grows best in humus-rich, cool, well-drained soil in sheltered part shade, tolerating moderate frost down to about -10°C.
