Calochortus amoenus

Endemic to the Sierra Nevada foothills of central California, Calochortus amoenus, known as the purple fairy-lantern, is a bulbous perennial 20-50 cm tall with a branching stem. The narrow basal leaf, still present at flowering, is joined by two or three smaller stem leaves. In spring, the stem bears two or more nodding flowers, their rose-pink petals curved inward into a globe-shaped lantern, fringed and lined with long pinkish hairs. The fruit is a winged capsule 2-3 cm long. It grows in well-drained soil in full sun.
