Native to San Luis Obispo County and the northern part of Santa Barbara County in California, Calochortus simulans, the San Luis Obispo mariposa lily, is a bulbous perennial growing in sandy soils of grassland, chaparral and pine forest. A branching stem up to 60 cm tall bears one to three erect, bell-shaped flowers with white to yellow petals marked with a deep red spot at the base. Flowering occurs in spring; the basal leaf withers before bloom. It grows well in full sun, in well-drained soil, with a dry summer rest period.
