Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The precise identity of this plant remains uncertain; it may correspond to a pink-flowered form or selection of Calochortus venustus, a mariposa lily (Liliaceae) native to California, growing in grasslands and open woodland between about 300 and 2700 m elevation. It is a bulbous perennial with a single basal leaf that withers before flowering. In late spring to summer it produces one to several large, cup-shaped flowers with boldly blotched petals, ranging from white to pink or red depending on the form. It requires sharply drained, sandy soil, a dry summer, and strict summer dormancy.
