Scilla campanulata

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
The name Scilla campanulata used to denote the Spanish bluebell, now reclassified as Hyacinthoides hispanica in the family Asparagaceae. The epithet "campanulata", meaning "bell-shaped", refers to the numerous pendulous flowers borne on the spring stem, generally blue-lavender. Native to Portugal, Spain and north-west Africa, this vigorous bulbous plant naturalises easily by offsets in woodland or in a cool border. Although the nomenclature has changed, the name remains commonly used in horticultural catalogues. Grow in cool, well-drained soil, half-shade.
