Capsicum annuum (pepper/chili) is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), native to Mexico and Central America, where it was domesticated thousands of years ago before spreading worldwide after the discovery of the Americas. It is an annual or short-lived perennial herbaceous shrub reaching about 1 m tall, with simple leaves and solitary, bell-shaped white flowers. The fruits vary greatly in shape and colour depending on the cultivar (green, yellow, orange, red), ripening from green to their final colour. It is grown in full sun on rich, well-drained soil, in mild climates or under cover.
