Cardiocrinum giganteum

Native to cool, moist forests and grassy slopes of the Himalaya, southwestern China, Myanmar and Nepal, Cardiocrinum giganteum is the largest member of the lily family, reaching up to 3.5 m tall. A rosette of broad, glossy dark green leaves precedes a sturdy stem bearing up to 20 fragrant, trumpet-shaped white flowers with purple throats in summer. The bulb is monocarpic, dying after flowering, but leaves numerous offset bulbs that flower again within a few years. Grown in part shade and deep, humus-rich, well-drained soil; expect four to seven years before first flowering.
