The genus

The unusual irregular shaped corms should be planted in half shaded well sheltered areas where it will thrive with its luxurious light green vegetation. Elegant spikes with original red flowers appear in early spring. The tubular zygomorphic flowers have a characteristic upper petal in the form up a "hood". The leaves will stay green untill early summer when bright red seeds are shed which will readily germinate in the autumn. Naturalises well in the coastal areas.
