Clivia mirabilis

Discovered in 1999 in the Oorlogskloof gorges of the Northern Cape, South Africa, Clivia mirabilis is the only species in the genus adapted to a semi-arid, winter-rainfall climate. It forms a clump of strap-shaped leaves with purplish bases, often with a white central stripe, arising from a fleshy rhizome. In spring, a purple stem carries a pendulous umbel of 20 to 48 orange to orange-red flowers with green tips, followed by red berries. It grows well in part shade, in well-drained stony soil, with a dry summer rest period.
