Colchicum cupanii

Widespread across the central Mediterranean basin, from France to Greece by way of Sardinia, Sicily, North Africa and Malta, Colchicum cupanii is a cormous plant in the Colchicaceae, known as Cupani's meadow saffron. The underground corm produces narrow foliage in autumn, alongside the flowers. The small flowers, up to 3 cm across, pink to purple, sometimes opening fully into a star shape and sometimes remaining cup-shaped, appear abundantly. The species grows in a sunny position, in well-drained, calcareous soil, and rests dormant through summer.
