Colchicum tenorii

Colchicum tenorii (now often treated as Colchicum cilicicum) is a cormous perennial native to Italy. In spring, a tuft of dark green, elliptic to lanceolate basal leaves appears, yellowing and dying back by summer. In late summer and autumn, leafless, star- to funnel-shaped flowers ranging from pale violet to lilac and rosy pink rise directly from the ground on short stems. It grows well in sun to part shade, in well-drained soil, with a dry rest period during summer.
The genus
Colchicums always occur in well drained habitats. Most species flower in the Autumn well before the leaves appear in the spring. THEY WILL EVEN FLOWER BEFORE BEING PLANTED. Most species are hardy and some species are sufficiently robust to naturalise in sub-alpine meadows or in wild gardens.
