Colchicum byzantinum (Colchicaceae), the Byzantine autumn crocus, is a bulbous plant of uncertain, probably hybrid origin, long cultivated in Europe. In autumn, ahead of the leaves, each bulb produces numerous rosy-lilac, cup-shaped flowers, up to twenty per bulb, followed in spring by broad foliage that should be left to die back naturally. Grow in full sun or part shade, in ordinary well-drained soil; hardy to around -20 °C.
