Crinum firmifolium

Endemic to Madagascar, Crinum firmifolium grows along riverbanks in the western part of the island, in a seasonally dry tropical climate. This Amaryllidaceae forms a large tunicated bulb 10-14 cm across, extended into a pseudostem made of sheathing old leaf bases. The lance-shaped leaves, with wavy margins, reach about 40 cm long. Borne on a scape up to 1 m tall, the inflorescence is an umbel of 8-20 sessile flowers with tepals that droop as they open. Like other Crinum, it needs rich soil and a sunny position, with generous watering during active growth.
