Crinum jagus

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to the tropical wetlands and grasslands of West Africa, Crinum jagus, known as St. Christopher's lily, is an evergreen bulbous plant 60 to 90 cm tall, its bulb tapering into a long neck, forming a clump of strap-shaped leaves, pale green beneath and glossy above. In early summer, occasionally twice a year, it produces on a scape about 60 cm tall large, white, trumpet-shaped flowers with a strong vanilla fragrance. It thrives in rich, moist soil, in sun to part shade, in a warm, frost-free climate, and loses its foliage where cold is pronounced.
