Native to tropical Africa as far south as Namibia, Crinum ornatum is a bulbous plant of seasonally dry regions, its bulb up to 10 cm across, multiplying into clumps by offsets. Narrowly lance-shaped, non-glaucous leaves accompany a scape 20 to 50 cm tall bearing 3 to 6 flowers, dark greenish-red in bud, opening to a white perianth marked with a broad, sharply defined dark red band visible on both sides. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry dormancy during the dry season, being frost-tender.
