Crocosmia crocosmiiflora x Lucifer — Montbretia,
An inter-specific cross (C. aurea x C. pottsii ) made by Lemoine (Nancy) in 1870 was the forerunner of a whole range of cultivars. 'Lucifer' is particularly tall and vigorous. The bright red flowers are typically arranged in a horizontally inclined spike. Easy to grow, but keep dry during the winter.
The genus
Crocosmia is also known under the name of Montbretia (although this name often refers to the small flowered cultivars). A very popular genus from the eastern part of South Africa. On condition that summerwater is provided and mulch protection during the winter is given they are easy to grow.
