Crocosmia

Crocosmia is a genus in the family Iridaceae comprising around ten species of cormous plants native to eastern and southern Africa, from Ethiopia to South Africa. Their narrow, pleated, sword-shaped foliage is topped in summer by long, arching stems bearing spikes of tubular or star-shaped flowers in orange, red or yellow. Several wild species gave rise to the garden hybrids grown as montbretia (C. × crocosmiiflora). Grow in full sun, in moist, well-drained soil; hardiness varies by species, and a winter mulch is advisable in cold regions.
