Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora (Iridaceae) is a garden hybrid raised in 1880 by French nurseryman Victor Lemoine, crossing C. aurea with C. pottsii (then named Montbretia pottsii, giving the common name montbretia). More vigorous than either parent, it forms clumps of sword-shaped foliage from which arching stems rise in summer, bearing spikes of funnel-shaped flowers in orange, red or yellow depending on the cultivar. It has naturalized across many temperate and subtropical regions. Grow in full sun, in rich, moist soil; hardy, with a winter mulch recommended further north.
