Crocus

Crocus is a genus in the family Iridaceae comprising around a hundred species of cormous plants native to the Mediterranean region, central Europe and western to central Asia. Their narrow leaves, often marked with a silvery midrib, accompany cup- or goblet-shaped flowers, borne singly or in clusters, opening in spring or autumn depending on the species. The genus includes saffron crocus (C. sativus), whose stigmas yield the spice. Grow in full sun, in well-drained soil that stays dry in summer for Mediterranean species; most crocuses are hardy and naturalize readily.
