Crocus alatavicus

Native to the mountains of Central Asia — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan — and to China's Xinjiang, where it is the only crocus found in the wild, Crocus alatavicus is a bulbous plant growing from a corm and bearing 8 to 20 narrow leaves, short at flowering time. It grows in mountain habitats among stones and scrub, often alongside Colchicum luteum. Depending on altitude, it flowers between February and May, producing white flowers with a yellow throat and anthers, marked outside with grey to blackish-violet spotting. It thrives in well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry rest period after flowering.
