Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
Native to Mount Hermon and the mountains of Lebanon, Syria and Samaria, Crocus hermoneus is a bulbous plant with an underground corm, bearing large flowers that open close to the ground, ranging from pinkish-white to purple. It flowers in autumn, before the leaves appear, which develop only after the first heavy rains, usually in November. The species comprises two subspecies, one confined to Mount Hermon, the other to the Samarian mountains near Ramallah. Considered rare in Israel, it thrives in calcareous, well-drained soil, in full sun, with a dry summer dormancy.
