Crocus hiemalis

Native to the Levant, particularly Lebanon, Syria and Israel, where it is the most common crocus species (Upper Galilee, Mount Carmel), Crocus hiemalis (also spelled hyemalis) is a cormous bulbous plant growing in stony ground and Mediterranean scrub. In the depths of winter it produces white flowers lightly streaked with violet on the outside, with a deep golden-orange throat, contrasting black anthers, and a style finely divided into up to 15 orange branches. It thrives in well-drained, calcareous soil, in full sun, and tolerates the long summer drought typical of the Mediterranean climate.
