Crocus kosaninii

Native to the Balkans, from southern Serbia through Kosovo to North Macedonia, Crocus kosaninii is a small cormous bulbous plant belonging to the group of spring-flowering crocuses related to Crocus vernus. Its solitary or paired flowers stay inconspicuous, then open suddenly after a warm day, in a lilac-blue to mid-violet shade, often marked outside with fine dark streaks at the base of the segments. The style divides into three short, frilled orange branches that usually overtop the anthers. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, with a dry summer dormancy.
