Crocus longiflorus

Native to south-western Italy, Sicily and Malta, Crocus longiflorus grows in Mediterranean grassland and rocky ground. This small cormous crocus reaches about 10 cm tall, with narrow, sword-shaped leaves appearing together with the flowers. In autumn, it bears fragrant, pale mauve to purple flowers with a yellow throat, its name referring to the characteristically long floral tube. Once wild-harvested to produce a local saffron in Sicily, the species requires full sun, well-drained soil, and a dry summer rest.
