Crocus oreocreticus

Endemic to the mountains of central and eastern Crete, Crocus oreocreticus is a cormous geophyte belonging to the Crocus sativus complex. In autumn it produces purplish flowers lacking a yellow throat, with a glabrous throat and a buff-to-silvery wash on the outer surface of the tepals, and long, much-divided red styles reminiscent of cultivated saffron. Classed as vulnerable in the wild, it warrants conservation attention. In cultivation it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and the dry summer dormancy typical of autumn-flowering Mediterranean crocuses.
