The exact species of this crocus could not be reliably identified, so the description below covers the genus Crocus as a whole. Native to a broad range extending from central and southern Europe through the Near East and Central Asia to western China, the genus (family Iridaceae) comprises around 90 perennial species growing from underground corms, with narrow leaves marked by a pale midrib stripe. Depending on the species, flowering occurs in spring or autumn, producing solitary six-tepalled flowers in a palette ranging from white to violet and yellow. Most prefer well-drained soil and a sunny position.
