Crocus sp ex pallasii

The exact identity of this collection could not be confirmed; it is a crocus related to Crocus pallasii, on which this description is based. Native to a range extending from the Balkans through the Levant to western Iran, Crocus pallasii is a bulbous plant with a flattened corm and a fibrous tunic extended into a long neck. From September to November it produces pale mauve to light violet flowers, finely veined with purple, with a bright yellow centre, on a plant 8 to 15 cm tall. It grows in open grassland and rocky soils, and is a possible ancestor of cultivated saffron.
