Crocus vernus

Native to the Alps, the Carpathians and the Balkans, Crocus vernus is a herbaceous perennial growing from a corm, reaching 10 to 15 cm in height, found in subalpine meadows, rocky slopes and woodland clearings. Its narrow, grass-like leaves emerge from the base of the plant before the flowers appear. In early spring, during March and April, it produces large flowers 5 to 7 cm across, usually purple or lilac with yellow or white centres, though white, striped or variegated forms also occur. Flowering lasts one to three weeks depending on conditions. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun.
